Basic CD-ROM Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions that get you from box to screen.

Step 1. Putting in the CD.

Insert your new CD into the CD-ROM drive on your computer.

Step 2. Finding the Files.

Wait a few minutes.  Your computer should prompt you with a list of options.  Click on the option to open or view files in a browser.  If your computer doesn't prompt you, see Step 5 below.

Step 3. Opening a File.

You will see a list of your patterns.  You can either open them straight from the CD by double-clicking on the file, or (if it is running slow) copy the files to your hardrive.   For more information on how to do this, see Step 6 below.

Step 4.  Printing a File.

To print one of your files, simply click on the print icon, or go to "File" at the top left and click "Print" from the drop down menu.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Please allow several minutes for your printer to start printing.  These are very large files and it takes a while for the printer to prepare them.  Go get out all the fun supplies you're going to use, get a cup of tea, and it will be printed before you know it.

EXTRA HELP STEPS

STEP 5.  This step will help you if your computer failed to prompt you with a list of CD options.

FOR WINDOWS USERS:

Click on the "Start" button at the bottom-left of your screen (it may just look like a flag).

Find "My Computer" in the list and click on it.

A page will open.  Under "Type" you will see "CD Drive".  The name of the CD might also appear on the list.  Double-click the CD Drive.

You are now ready for Step 3.

FOR MAC USERS:

Open "The Finder".  It should be active when you start up your computer, but you can also access it by any of the following ways.  Choose the method that's easiest for you.

a) Simply click on the desktop.
b) Double-click any folder icon to open a Finder window.
c) Click the Finder icon (it looks like a two-toned blue, rectangular, smiling face) in the Dock.
d) Select any application, file, or folder by clicking once in a Finder window or on the desktop.
e) Double-Click on your hard disk

In the top left part of the finder window, you will see a heading called "Devices".   You should find your CD listed there.  Click on it.

A list of the CD's contents will appear in the section to the right.

You are now ready for Step 3.

STEP 6. Moving files from the CD to your hardrive.

Starting from the end of Step 3 above, you should now be looking at a list of your CD's contents.

Highlight all the files you want to copy by doing the following:

1. Click once on the file at the very top so that it is highlighted
2. Hold down the shift key on your keyboard and press the Down-Arrow key until all the files are highlighted
3. Right click on one of the highlighted files
4. From the drop down menu, click on copy

Next, navigate to the location you want to place your files.  This could be Desktop, My Documents, Documents or any other location you choose.

On the menu at the top of the window:

1. Click on "Edit"
2. From the drop down menu, click on "Paste"
3. Wait until all the files have copied over.  This could take a few minutes.

The files are now saved on your hardrive.  To open them from now on, go to the new location (Desktop, My Documents, Documents, etc...) and double-click on the file you wish to open.  Note: You do not need to keep the CD in your CD drive to open these files as they are now located on your computer.

Go to Step 4 for information about printing files.
